Prof. Friend is Chair of the Department of Geography, as well as Director of Earth Science Programs, at Minnesota State University. He specializes in mountain and desert environments and is keenly interested in geographic and international education. He serves on the Association of American Geographers (AAG) governing body, the AAG Council, and is the US Representative to the International Geographical Union Commission on Mountain Systems. He is Associate Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Mountain Science published by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and serves as North American Regional Editor for Geographische Rundschau-International Edition published by Westermann. In 2004 he was a Fulbright Senior Scholar and Guest Professor at the Institut für Geographie, Universität Erlangen. He is once again Guest Professor in Erlangen until 15 June 2007. His Ph.D. is in Geography (1997) from Arizona State University.
