Fred W. Krüger is Full Professor of Geography at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. He is member of the boards of directors of the Department of Geography and Geosciences and the Institute of Geography. His research and teaching interests, committed to cross-disciplinary approaches, focus on Urban Studies and on Development Geography. Major research fields in the Urban Studies arena cover urban planning, inner city development, urban cultures, and the social production of urban public spaces. In Development Geography, he specialises on theoretical approaches and the empirical, actor-oriented analysis of poverty (especially in cities), vulnerability, resilience, livelihood security, and concepts of risk. A regional focus lies on southern Africa.

Current research activites focus on the impact of HIV/AIDS on human livelihoods in Botswana. In this field, a research project was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Other activities include involvement in the international research initiative on "Urbanisation and Its Impact on the Use of Natural Resources in Africa" funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. A study on "Urban Coolture - Why some urban places are hip and others are not" is in its final stages of preparation. Past third-party funded research activities in the context of the "developing world" involved urban planning issues, social vulnerability patterns, and drought management and food security in southern Africa.
