Institut für Geographie der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg

Institute of Geography

The Institute of Geography in Erlangen has a rich tradition and is one of the largest at a German-speaking University. The first Professor of Geography in Erlangen was appointed in 1895. Today the academic staff includes eight professors and about 40 researchers in a post-doctorate or doctorate position offering a broad spectrum of research and teaching. Still our students highlight the friendly atmosphere and the staff being highly approachable, ensuring an intense, personal engagement.

The Institute can rely on state-of-the-art technologies e.g. workspaces with specialized software such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing, tools for media documentation and analysis as well as tools for qualitative and quantitative analysis, geovisualisation and statistics; laboratories (soild science incl. mass spectrometry, dendro-ecology) and a well-organized library (with the unique German speaking online catalogue GeoDok) as well as access to many online journals).

The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is the second largest university in Bavaria with a broad range of disciplines. Our location in Erlangen is an attractive and lively southern German University town with about 100,000 inhabitants, offering proximity between the various University campuses and still a range of attractions for off-campus student life. A short light-rail trip away, Nuremberg (with around a half million inhabitants) has an international airport and offers diverse cultural activities. At Erlangen’s doorstep, the Franconian Switzerland provides for many leisure opportunities of mid-range mountains (climbing, walking, mountain biking, Canoe/Kayaking and so forth). Erlangen is also well connected with fast (Intercity Express) trains to Munich (approx. 180km to the south) and Berlin (approx. 400km to the north).
